Overview
The Young Person’s ‘Be who you want to be’ Survey Engagement Report, published in February 2024, provides an in-depth analysis of youth engagement activities focused on the South Western area of the Claremont ward in Blackpool. The report is the result of a bespoke, co-designed survey initiated by local young people, aiming to capture their voices and visions for development in the community.
Conducted through youth-led focus groups, the survey garnered 66 responses over a seven-week period from late October to early December 2023. Participants shared their ideas on themes such as safety, cultural initiatives, and community spaces, with notable suggestions including the enhancement of street lighting, the creation of supportive spaces for arts and identity, and greater involvement in dialogues with local authorities.
Findings
The survey engaged young people from a broad cross-section of the youth community, beginning with demographic questions regarding age and gender identity. This foundation enabled the collection of diverse perspectives on a new initiative. Respondents highlighted various aspects they appreciate about the local area, including buildings, cafes, and shops, indicating an appreciation for both amenities and aesthetic appeal. Many participants engage with the area through residence, schooling, and socialising, while a notable number expressed a lack of connection.
Young people expressed desires for vibrant and inclusive enhancements, such as community centres for arts and activities, safe outdoor spaces, and dedicated areas for performance arts, illustrating a clear preference for creative and recreational facilities. Safety concerns were prevalent, with mixed feelings about the area’s safety, particularly in evening hours. Recommendations for improved street lighting, safer spaces, and increased community-focused health services underscored a collective interest in fostering well-being and security. These findings reflect a strong desire for inclusivity, safety, and community engagement within the area, guiding potential future developments.
Key and emerging themes from each of the engagement topic areas are as follows:
• Safety improvements on street lighting, less focus on bars and drinking culture and more
focus on cafes, family areas both indoor and outdoor.
• Culture and arts, visible arts ie street graffiti, rainbow pelican crossing or road, flags with
positive affirmations, area for music, drama, etc as well as sport areas.
• Young person’s club that is accessible to all with focus on identity.
• Action to have a group of young people to walk and talk with police and other stakeholders to
review and talk about their ideas and solutions in the area.
