Youth & Community Support Worker (Part Time)

Responsible to: UYA Director

Weekly hours: 20 hours per week

Hourly rate: From scale point 7 £13.50ph (depending on qualifications and experience)

Purpose of the role:

This role is very much a development position. United Youth Alliance want to offer the opportunity for the right person to start/develop their youth worker journey here on the Fylde Coast.

The role will be alongside young people and community members to support a place-based approach to promote personal and social development and facilitate a community voice, influence and place in communities on the Fylde Coast.

UYA do this through social action, research, training and community development.

The role will involve:

To support the delivery of United Youth Alliance’s Coastal Social Action operational plan, with a key focus on developing Social Action projects with Young People and the community within Blackpool and the Fylde Coast.

To support the implementation of a Coastal Social Action plan on the Fylde Coast, supporting young people and the community to have a key role in developing their communities.

To support the implementation of the United Youth Alliance Participation and leadership Framework model to measure outcomes for young people.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. To support in the recruitment of young people from across the Fylde Coast aged 14 – 17 to create social action group
  1. To encourage young people to actively participate in the decision-making processes and lead on their social action groups, working within the UYA participation and leadership Framework model and United Nations Rights of the Child.
  1. As part of a team, build and maintain positive relationships with the young people and community members including external stakeholders, using effective communication and listening skills.
  1. To support the community-based research and participation projects, working alongside community members, businesses, key stakeholders and young people.
  1. To establish working relationships with key stakeholders including community groups, schools, colleges and other youth provision in the area as well as local and national partners. ie #iwill, Plan International, UK Youth and NYA
  1. To support the facilitation and the development of Social Action groups and support young people to take the lead in developing their social action project and place-based events and conferences
  1. Use innovative, safe and interactive activities that appeal to local young people and support their Where beneficial this should also include virtual delivery.
  1. Follow, with support, robust early intervention and prevention strategies that ensure young people’s needs are picked up as early as possible in accordance with United Youth Alliance safeguarding procedures.
  2. To support in ensuring community spaces used by the group are welcoming, safe, and comfortable environments and are compliant with relevant legislative requirements including Health and Safety, Child protection, Data Protection and Equalities Act 2010.
  3. Assist with and effectively promote United Youth Alliance social media sites to young people, key stakeholders, funders, and partners. Using a wide variety of online and offline forms of communication, community engagement and outreach.
  1. Using appropriate, effective, and robust tools, support the impact measurement of the project on young people’s development and social mobility. Assist in the production of monthly impact reports and evaluation processes for United Youth Alliance.
  1. Undertake other responsibilities commensurate with post and responsibilities.


The Hours:

You will be employed to work for a set number of 20 hours per week.  Exact details of your initial working pattern will be provided to you by your manager before you start work and will be agreed according to project requirements. 

Qualities, interests and skills of a youth and community worker

UYA requires a youth support worker. While this role is developmental, having some knowledge and experience of planning, with a co-production approach alongside young people and communities, would be an advantage, alongside preparing, delivering and evaluation of youthwork sessions.

You will be able to work positively with other staff and volunteers and have a keenest to develop skills in participation, planning, recording, monitoring and evaluation.

What we would seek for this role:

  • Recent and proven experience of working effectively alongside young people and/or community groups
  • An ability and willingness to develop and work alongside young people and community members to create social action groups.
  • Ability to relate to, encourage and motivate young people.
  • A cultural competency to know your identity and respect and recognise the identities and assets within the communities we work in.
  • Knowledge of issues that are current and relevant to young people
  • Hold or willingness to work towards a relevant Youth Work Qualification (Level 3 Minimum); to be achieved within 14 months of commencing in post
  • An ability to work positively as part of a team and independently, seeking support from colleagues where required
  • Ability to communicate effectively with young people, community members and the team.
  • Ability to support the co design through UYA participation approaches, youth and community projects
  • Understanding of, and commitment to the promotion of equitable policies and practice.
  • A genuine regard for young people and the communities within which we work and to demonstrate respect and kindness.

Terms and conditions:

  • Rate of pay are JNC and will depend on experience and qualifications
  • Sessional staff rates: Initial rate from £12.50 upwards
  • 20 Hours a week
  • Reflective supervision will be provided on a regular basis
  • Duration of role – 12 months fixed term
